More Than Gold

More Than Gold

A Poem by StormeLight

There once was a boy
Who became a man
He watched with tears
As he desired the girl
The one who was most beautiful
Most beautiful,
The most beautiful girl in all the land
The girl paid him no attention
He watched as she took the hand
Of another boy more beautiful
Most beautiful,
The most beautiful boy in all the land
So when he became a man
He told himself many lies
About the time he could never get
The most beautiful girl in all the land
What he never knew
Her vanity she outgrew
She was no longer the most beautiful
Most beautiful,
In all the land
Beautiful boys,
And beautiful girls
Turn into men and women
One day they learn the value
Of the souls they kept so hidden
But the boys who became men
Are now men,
Still trying to gain
The wisdom they never learned
That you can't change who you are
To make someone see you
One day people grow older
And then they learn
The beauty of their soul
In a world full of pretenders
You see,
My dear boys,
Who never learned to see
Who let rejection be the teacher
Instead of inner wisdom,
You must seek
You think material things,
You think chiseled muscles bring,
The beauties you so desired
From moments of your past
But what you do not see
Is women of quality
Will never value that which rejected you
In the first place
See you went, and you changed
Instead of staying the same
In hopes of one day finding
In hopes of one day proving
You deserve more than rejection
But no woman you can buy
With the gold that you worked hard for
Is worth spending time on
Materials can crumble
Rejection will come again
If you keep chasing dreams
With monetary and physical things
A heart of gold does not know boundaries
Or the conditions for which you set your self-love
It knows only unconditional love
The values which it holds
You cannot convince this heart of gold
That it should love you on conditions
It is only that which cages you
Your volatile self-loathing prison
So now you cannot accept this love
So long for which you longed
Because you hold these standards
The standards that you bought
