Tango

Tango

A Poem by Jessica Cowan

I showed up empty handed to a gun fight

I've been here once before but I just might

Let it all go on the slim chance

So let's do this soul bargaining dance.

I glanced upon his shoulder all I had

I smiled too quick, was too glad

To see a short success and hesitate

I should know that one second is all it takes.

This is the darkness I live in

Not knowing what he wants to happen

Breathing in the air of defeat

Preparing for a beating retreat.

I can't seem to catch my breath

Waiting to see what I will be left with

I always judge too soon and get burned

Never stopping to realize what I should have learned.

My emotionless stare and colorless mood

Land me alone where I sing of solitude.

These duels are how I show

The depth of what I do not know

The only time I come out to chance

Failing this soul bargaining dance.
