Silk Jacket

Silk Jacket

A Poem by Norma M Sutton

It wraps me in silk
Bright buckles shine in the sun
That silk jacket of care

It wraps me in silk
Seeking my protection
Silk jacket of repair

It wraps me in silk
Heds not my rejection
Silk jacket that won't tear

It wraps me in silk
Sees not the dripping tears
Silk jacket strips me bare

It wraps me in silk
As I struggle to run
Silk jacket you take away from me

It wraps me in silk
In a suffocating grip
Silk jacket  that I wear

It wraps me in silk
Crushing my wings
Silk jacket of despair

It wraps me in silk
Breaking my desire
Silk jacket I despise

It wraps me in silk
Never seeing what its done
Silk jacket is killing me

It wraps me in silk
Overprotective it ties
Silk jackets arms hold me still

It wraps me in silk
Its buckles I can't reach
Until at last in this silk jacket I'll die

Author's Note

Norma M Sutton
The silk jacket represents the love of the over protective parent. The poem follows how the love that starts out as the parent wants to protect that small child from all harm. But progresses as the child grows up and that silken jacket becomes too small and too limiting until when the child is grown it becomes a silken straight jacket that slowly and surely kills the adult.

It is very hard to allow your children to run free. But we must. I like how you made your poem with the use of silk to make your point. A very good ending to a excellent poem.

I understand 'protective' parent but 'over protective' is just too much. The four first stanzas with the last line rhymed and then trailed off.

Material possessions can dilute our emotions when we rely on them to much for comfort... I see your author's notes but when I read it it spoke to me this way.

My own parents were more like spandex...they could stretch...lol I like this..quite a nice analogy.

Excellent metaphor. So very true.... As a parent you have to learn to adjust that accordingly so you're not suffocating, killing, the person you were trying to protect. I like this. Nice work.

yes! that cocoon of silk threads that must be escaped to become the 'butterfly' we are all intented to become ~ such a delicate balance between Love and Caring..
