Showcase

Showcase

A Poem by Wall of Words
"

I'm not here to be shown off...

"

Nothing to do

Enclosed in glass

Let everyone see

I’m not an object!

And artifact to show off

Not something to order around

Put in a certain position

For the affect you want

I’m not a trinket

Another useless thing

To add to your key-chain

I’m not here to be stared at

To be gawked at; waved at

I’m here to be me,

With my true personality

To try and make you see

I’m not just another girl

To showcase

Author's Note

Wall of Words
I would like to note that I have never been in a relationship. However, I have "experienced" it all through my brother who has had about 20 girlfriends over the last decade, and through great authors' books.
So... the word "showcase" came to mind, and I seized the idea. :)
Hope you enjoyed!
Sylvia.

A very thought-provoking piece. It brings light onto so many of the issues that women in today's world face, where sometimes it seems that people treat them more as commodities than people. Your writing has grown to include political ideas as well- it's an interesting change. This piece reminds me of a Margaret Atwood quote-
“Male fantasies, male fantasies, is everything run by male fantasies? Up on a pedestal or down on your knees, it's all a male fantasy: that you're strong enough to take what they dish out, or else too weak to do anything about it. Even pretending you aren't catering to male fantasies is a male fantasy: pretending you're unseen, pretending you have a life of your own, that you can wash your feet and comb your hair unconscious of the ever-present watcher peering through the keyhole, peering through the keyhole in your own head, if nowhere else. You are a woman with a man inside watching a woman. You are your own voyeur.”

Literature that makes one think is always brilliant. Great job!

I love this. It is so perfect because even though I am in a steady, happy relationship I see too many people throwing their significant other in other peoples faces. Lately it seems like relationships depend too much on others opinions.

I liked this. :) Are you a feminist? Seems like it. I am. ^^ I liked this poem a lot, because it seems the way girls are "slutting themselves up," they don't think they have any worth, and definitely have no thoughts like these. I liked this!

That's right. You're not going to be if you don't want to. Your call. :)

You've never been in a relationship, Sylvia ? Now while I consider myself a bit of a recluse and secluded from the world, you - might wanna get out and see some people. Not everyone is out to get you (most are, but not everyone) :)

As for your brother, I'm not certain he would make the the best role-model to follow after, not with a new girlfriend every 6-months.

What are same names of books you like that you feel have shown positive and good relationships in them ?

You're welcome. :)
Women who are showcased are oftentimes done so by men who are addicted to control and pride. They yearn to control everything about their partners, and our too proud to realize that showcasing them as trophy women is more about them than about the women. It has also been my understanding that women who are showcased are done so because of their exterior beauty. In showcasing that, they are indeed minimized to being paraded around like objects instead of people. This poem certainly describes that beautifully. Thank you for writing this poem and sharing it with us!

Sylvia.
This is a wonderful work.
A great 'showcase' of your personality.
Your own mentality, faith, value system and surrounding influenced you to develop the personality.
A boy takes 20 girl friends.
Alternatively a girl takes 20 boy friends.
They exploit and cheat their preys.
This is all bad and abominable.
A person wants to be loved and honored through a relationship.
She/he doesn't want to be cheated.
Once cheated or exploited the person may become revengeful.
That makes more damage to the innocent love seeking persons.
Your write indicates that you abhor such nonsense.
I adore you,dear friend.
Your thoughts and work may inspire many girls and boys to develop their personality in positive manner.
