The Unspeakable

A free-verse poem with a dark theme.

Arising from unconscious depths,

a thing of unspeakable sorrow.

From the darkened corners of my mind,

in company of repressed horrors,

it arises.

Stealthily slipping past my defenses

to take control of my thoughts.

I don’t see it coming; I never do.

It lacks shape or reason,

there is only the overwhelming urge it nurtures.

There is no way to cry for help,

no way to share the unspeakable;

I am alone.

There is only one escape:

the path illuminated by this darkness.

Not without fear

I once again let the urge tempt me,

towards the peace I have long desired.

release from temptation's grip by surrendering to it? Something which I think we all experience but I would say not clearly recognized. Well said and phrased, thought provoking, thanks for the post. -carl
