Ode to My Ex

Ode to My Ex

A Poem by Scott "Sage" Goodenough

My words break against the concrete
Like a perfect porcelain doll, being dropped
From the height of love.

Lingering just above the ground,
Awaiting the surreal moment they
Connect, in a soft whisper, unheard
By no one. There are plenty of
Sharpened pieces of heart
To go around, don't be shy.

Surrounded by cops, sirens

Of an ambulance in the distance,

Rushing to your aid. Asking me

If there’s anything I’d like to say.

“She’s gone, and I miss her…

Now get out of my face."

It’s not like they could bring you

Back, they’re just reporting the news.

As heartless reporters, tend to do.

“Oh my gosh, someone’s dead

On the side-walk, what

Do we do?” Figure out

Who’s to blame, blame.

That’s what they do.

All they do…

My words for you are broken.
Before I continue screaming

Into this puddle of bloodstained
Tears, please do remind me
That this is not a dream, it is real.
I did this, and should be sorry.

I should be screaming into
A lake of blood, submerged
Until I drown a little more
With each dying breath. I only wish,
More of this blood was mine…

In other words, I'm sorry
I hurt you, but that, my friend,
Is the nature of love.
