Behind my mask

Behind my mask

A Poem by Claudia

I smile and laugh
I walk with grace
but behind my mask
you'll see a different face

I tell all the jokes
Never am I gray
"you don't know what its like to be sad"
you say

But little do you know
I cry myself to sleep
I scream into my pillow
instead of counting sheep

Perfect hair
Perfect smile
Perfect,Perfect,Perfect
But it isn't worthwhile

... i'm just stunned by this poignant verse ... i can't actually begin to imagine what this must feel like ... yet i know ... that we all have the tendency to presume things about people and it's really, really not fair to them at all ... i think an important part of being human is being humane ... and this verse brings that message to the fore with remarkable clarity, simplicity and grace ... to someone who makes an effort to remain cheerful all the time ... this line ... "you don't know what it's like to be sad" ... must hurt brutally ... especially someone who has child-like innocence and purity like the narrator in this verse ... as is evident from these lines ... "i cry myself to sleep" ... "i scream into my pillow" ... "instead of counting sheep" ... and how moving it is to see in the end of this verse that even the narrator's agony is expressed with utmost class and restraint ... in these lines ... "perfect, perfect, perfect" ... "but it isn't worthwhile" ... as a reader ... as a writer ... and as an individual ... i'm intensely expressive ... and so i don't know how i'd manage to survive if ... for whatever reason ... i was unable to express myself ... and because of that knowledge ... i can sense how powerful this verse is ... and how meaningful and how melancholic ... unforgettable ... truly ...
