Graveyard Shift

Graveyard Shift

A Poem by Sara Henry Heistand
"

Not edited. Eee.

"

I touch the stone

marvel at the smudge of ink

dominating the veneer

that’s heartache

when headlights hit

the tombstones through

the churchyard gate

I want to end it

The house echoes

a lonely sound

a forgotten flame

it all unwinds

and disappears

aghast at the atmosphere

funny how we took

a wrong turn

            at the sign.

The memories

start and stop

braking at the gate

It’s a slippery slope

Getting back out

Maybe we won’t make the trip.

i remember something from a book by kurt vonagut (sp) at the begining on one of the chapters he drew a picture of a tombstone, and on it he wrote the words "everything was beautiful, nothing hurt" that was just something that stuck with me... like a doorway with a welcome mat. this poem kind of has the same effect on me. kind of casual and calm, yet kind of spooky too. really liked this poem, well crafted. zig
