The Call Of Nature

The Call Of Nature

A Story by Ioana Georgiana

I want to spend more time out  in the open. It would be nice for a change. Instead of being chained to our moblie phones we could connect and become one with the nature. The ultimate technology detoxification.
I dream of going to great distances, walking on unknown paths. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say.     But beauty is an abstract noun. People are different. Perception differs from a human to another.

I can see myself walking unsteadily on a steep hill. My senses shut down one by one. This is a test where my instincts are above anything else. The  soft hushing of the wind is my only guide.  On the top of the hill there is a large slate grey rock. Its otherwise smooth surface is covered by a thick moss blanket. The view  which unfolds beneath my eyes is breathtaking. So I try to make the most of it. I advance towards the fuzzy rock, deciding to sit down and relax. My feet look like they could use a break.

Instead of staring at  the burnt orange horizon as the golden hour is about to kick in, I close my eyes. And I breathe. In and out.  In with the positive, out with the toxic.  My breathing evens out progressively as my mind gets clearer and clearer by the second. The clouds of cluttered thoughts start to disperse. The fog in my mind clears out. I reach the state of complete tranquility.
The alarm clock blares out obnoxiously,  its familiar sound pulling me out of my silent reverie.  I curse under my breath and I vow to turn to the call of nature from time to time.

I think you hit on important points in this writing. I myself wonder about the connection of rising anxiety and depression cases compared to our detachment from nature. Computers and cell phones have their place, but we come from the dirt. The more civilized we become the more unhappy we are. When I say civilized I mean living within large cities and communities. Not civilized as in humane. One thing I notice I do though is I let an idea take over the story instead of characters. So I constantly have to go back and put my ideas in the background and let the actual story (which are your character) take more of the spotlight. I'd say develope your character in this one a little more, which in turn will develope the overall idea and story. I enjoyed this piece though and look forward to writing more.
