His Shoulder (Dream)

His Shoulder (Dream)

A Story by Tiffany Howard

I was tired, my eyelids heavy, but my mind was wide awake. How couldn't it be when he was so close and asking for my attention? We sat together against the wall by the secondary gym, looking at some videos about soccer matches, and though I found it so interesting, I couldn't keep my attention on it.

His smell was intoxicating and calming at the same time, making me excited yet relaxed all at once and overall just exhausting me to the point where I'd blink and my eyes would stay shut for a second or two before they opened again.

Suddenly, I feel how warm my cheeks are. The heat comes in a rush and I blink again before realizing why. At some point I had leaned against his shoulder, my cheek pressed flat against it, and to my pleasant surprise he didn't do anything to move me off. In fact, he just kept talking to me like normal, like he didn't mind, and that is what jarred me from my stupor.

I sit upright again, feeling more awake, and he still says nothing. He clicks on a new video and we watch that one instead. I feel on Cloud 9 over the simple thing, but I know it could mean anything.

Then I wake up.
