a masking ritual

a masking ritual

A Poem by nikki lea

to admit that one is a defect, a flaw in the great design,
it holds a bravery and a strength that allows one
to continue in life on a different path than those around you.
opened eyes allow me to see the suffering under a smile
the telltale signs of pain and depression that hide under a mask.
most of the time the mask is in firm place held by stubbornness
but now and then the facade is too difficult to remain
allowed to crumble someone peers in and sees the truth
they stumble backwards as if the sight is too much pain to bear
just once i would like someone to look at that broken reflection
and allow the mask to go back up without a spoken apology
so the mask stay on unless the crowds are gone and no eyes remain
it becomes part of a ritual, awaken and shower the nightmare away,
look in the mirror
put the mask in place
walk out the door
without a second delay

Very well written for the mask hides many flaws in this world of ours many won't play there hand or show there true colors Just to hide some strange defect that separates the good form the bad.
