The Rich Are Poor

The Rich Are Poor

A Poem by Tessa
"

"
A luxurious mansion plated with gold
An expensive car with a color so bold
A beach house in the Bahamas with a perfect view
And a yacht by the ocean, too
A perfect life, what could go wrong?
When you can buy every antique across the land
But what would you do if your wealth
Just started to sink like a man in quicksand?
All your boats, cars and houses
Are taken away at sight
No more vacation penthouses
How will you ever survive?
Living life in poverty is trickier than you thought
Asking for things from strangers that you previously could've bought
Life's never been so hard, everything just seems hopeless
You can't keep any jobs because you can never seem to focus
In your entire life, you've never felt so deprived
Until one day by chance, you met two guys
You were talking for awhile when the subject came up
You told them that you'd never had it so rough
They were pretty shocked to hear that you used to be a millionaire
You told them about all the fancy clothes that you used to wear
Never in their lives had they imagined to have it that good
One said, "Well when I was growing up, my dad used to chop wood,
he didn't make much, but he offered his love.
He said mama was watching us from the sky above.
Throughout the financial struggles our family remained united,
because with compassion and kindness our love for each other remained ignited."
The story left you stunned, because even without much fund
Their family love was so strong, they never felt that their life was wrong
When you were growing up you're dad was a successful entrepreneur
He let his job consume him just so he could dress in couture
You wouldn't hear from him for days because he'd be so invested
And when he took a break he'd start again as soon as he was fully rested
The other guy told me a story about a time when he was young
He said, "My mom came home with a grocery bag one night,
and although I thought it'd be a bag of rum,
it was bread and cheese to my delight.
Keep in mind I'd barely eaten anything for the past few days,
and the only thing I was in any position to do was pray.
I had never been so excited for a grilled cheese sandwich in my life,
my mouth was watering just at the sight.
Though my mom had gotten so consumed
with drinking up her sorrows,
she still cared for her only son
and made sure he'd live to see tomorrow."
These few guys made you open your eyes
You went to your small apartment and started to cry
You realized all your life you've been shielded
From the true riches of the world
The best part of life isn't money
Not gems, jewels or gold
It's the people who are in it
And the stories from generations down that are told
These guys became like brothers to you
The only real family you've ever had
You realized that losing all your money
Was the best thing that's happened to you yet
