Days Of Familiarity

Days Of Familiarity

A Poem by Kasaundra
"

This is a poem I wrote in my junior year of High School back in 2008.

"
As a chapter in our lives nears closing,
Our futures lie ahead, moving closer into reach.
It’s just a year away, If we’re ready for it or not.
We can’t slow it down, and it’s all happening soon.
Just think, we’ll all be graduating next June.

It’s a frightening, yet exciting feeling.
Knowing the fact we’ve all made it this far,
Four years of high school used to seem so long.
But now it’s creeping closer, just a year until we go.
Let’s savor our upcoming senior year, for soon we go solo.

Even though we’re to return after this summer passes,
Some of our friend, seniors, sadly they will not.
Our stepping-stones who lead us to where we are,
Creating a path that I’m afraid will become lonesome.
Yet, we’re forced to smile as we’re left behind.
But next year’s our chance, it will be our time.

Filling out applications, deciding where to go.
Where there’ll be no rams, ramble, or Homecoming dance.
It’s to be our final year before we enter into adulthood.
Where we’ll put our ambition to the ultimate test.
Some of our talents may then be followed by success.

Choosing our roads, paving the paths
Class of 2009, we’re the next in line.
So we’ll stand up tall for all to see.
As we tightly grasp our diplomas in hand,
And shed a single tear to what we’ll leave behind
Next year’s the year, that year we shine.

Just imagine, us all there in our caps and gowns,
Patiently awaiting to hear our name be called.
Only to look out and see our parents crying,
Then notice most of us, we’re crying too.
We’re leaving the school where we’ve spent four years,
Into the world, all grown, alone, one of parents’ greatest fears.

Still, we’ll hold on to our memories from here at MHS,
And we’ll even look back at our yearbooks,
Read all the “see yous” and “goodbyes”
See the pictures of our friends and teachers,
As well as ones of the clubs and teams,
And spirit days dressed in whites and greens.

When our future beckons to call,
We’ll look forward to tomorrow,
And relinquish yesterday.
Now, as the sun is slowly setting,
Our future’s moving into reach.
This chapter nears a closing as we hear our graduation speech.

Our final days of familiarity,
Our last year at MHS.
We’ll look forward to tomorrow,
And relinquish yesterday.
