The Thaw

The Thaw

A Poem by Wesley Dingler

To say the least,

   The day you met me

(there in the dark,

   lost to mind and heart),

I was a damaged goodie,

   Fumbling in an Alabama hoodie.

But you taught me that spring

   Something that I believe

To be the most important thing:

   That even the blind

Are gifted with insight.

And I will never see the sun

   Rising without

Being reminded of your name

   And about how

You saw a light in me

   That no one else saw,

And I felt a warmth in you

So strong that it brought me to thaw.

...

Then--I drew a line through my life--

Hoping they could discern more clearly--

The person that I am tonight

From the person I had been previously.

But--sadly--it was to no avail--

As none of them can fully tell--

How wonderful it can feel

To warm after a great chill.

But I will never see the sun

   Rising without

Being reminded of your name

   And about how

You saw a light in me

   That no one else saw,

And I felt a warmth in you

So strong that it brought me to thaw.

...

And didn't the sun

   Shine through to me,

And blind so beautifully?

And at once, darkness did, of course,

Abscond with the starkness it adores.

And I drew a breath,

   Which I could attest

Had been my very first.

An experience to, at last, quench my thirst.

Now I will never see the sun

   Rising without

Being reminded of your name

   And about how

You saw a light in me

   That no one else saw,

And I felt a warmth in you

So strong that it brought me to thaw.

...

To say the least,

   The day you met me

(there in the dark,

   lost to mind and heart),

I was a damaged goodie,

   Fumbling in an Alabama hoodie.

But you taught me that spring

   Something that I believe

To be the most important thing:

   That even the blind

Are gifted with insight.

What a beautiful piece. So appreciative. The tone is very beholden and the title... absolutely brilliant. This made me feel all types of warm and fuzzy feelings. Thank you for writing this. And I am happy you had someone to help you through a difficult time.

Powerfully emotive, and expressed so succinctly as well.

Nicely done, and all the best,
