Sensory Overload

Sensory Overload

A Poem by Alaina
"

My brain on speed.

"

I only function

with

what my brain feels

is a sufficient

amount of Caffeine.

I don’t smoke pot.

My conscious state

is never chemically altered,

(I can’t speak for my subconscious)

it occurs naturally that way.

I am on Speed

twenty-four hours a day

seven days a week, and

not from the Caffeine.

It keeps my body from

falling behind.

I am capable of twelve different

conversations at once.

Physics gets in the way,

Biology too.

I only have one mouth.

Two ears aren’t enough

to decipher all the sounds that

flood my nerve endings.

I filter noise through my skin.

That’s why I hear voices

days later, finally reaching my ears.

I like this. I think you are trying to describe a piece of your realty here, or how you process reality around you.

I can appreciate what you're saying; how limited we are. Grammatically concerned; I don't know if caffine is capitalized or not. But that is least of my critiques. The second stanza needs a little work, the parenthetical comment doesn't quite do it for me. And farther on, if you could explain a little about physics, biology and the like -- is the speaker a student? And just how frustrating is it to only have one mouth.

The ending lines are impressive. I'd add a comma after voices; the situation leading to insanity? Nope; I just hear the voices days later. Do you see? Then again -- it's not my poem is it! Beyond that; the first stanza is solid. It does the trick. The third stanza works too, but alluding to caffine in another way might strengthen it a little more.
