A Poem by Yuan Tao
"

What excuses him? What condemns her?

"

A woman,

A man,

stressed from school,

 stressed from work,

goes for a drink.

goes for a drink.

A lawyer by day

 A businessman by day

but shows her legs at night.

but shows his fists at night.

She's careful not to drive,

He's careful where he parks,

before she has five drinks,

  before he has five drinks,

instead walks home, heels in hand.

and walks back, keys in hand.

Then, she sees a man

Then, he sees a woman

with shirt torn, skin showing,

with shirt low, skin showing,

and she feels the urge to run.

and he feels the urge to attack.

No one hears her scream

 No one hears her scream

so she is terrified.

 so he isn't worried.

Later, they'll tell her

Later, they'll tell him

“Your skirt was too short

  “Her skirt was too short

so it was your fault.”

so it wasn't your fault.”

“You were drinking

 “You were drinking

and that condemns you.”

and that excuses you.”
