Night Dream

Night Dream

A Poem by Dream Hunter

Night Dream

When the last sliver of sun

Sinks 'neath the horizon

When all the air is cool

Then can I be

Contentedly

Me, myself, tonight.

The city lights gone

And the dusk wears on

The air settles to a chill

But that time is

The time dreams live

With me, myself, tonight.

Then I soar like a silent owl

Then I race with the night wind’s howls

I can fly on the wings of the sky

I am me tonight.

I am the stars that pepper the night

I am the luminous moon’s pure light

I am the air of the springtime breeze

I am me tonight.

I am the fireflies that gleam and shine

I am the space in a wrinkle in time

I am the flame of a sunset sky

I am me tonight.

I am the mist on a forest floor

I am the frost on a wooden door

I am the warmth of the fire in the hearth

I am me tonight.

I am the lark singing its song

I am the frog croaking for dawn

I am the cricket chirping away

I am me tonight.

I am the deer, alert and shy

I am the fox, furtive and sly

I am the rabbit, curious and stout

I am me tonight.

By day I can leap and run and ride

By night I can soar and swoop and glide

But only when I dream my beautiful dreams

Can I be me tonight.

Amid the beauty spoken of in this poem is the sadness of someone who feels lost in a self that seems only true in the night-dream. When the "I am" turns into doubt and questions "Can I?" The point is made. Once through an experience that enlightens, one often wonders why it cannot always be so. Without knowing, of course, that each experience wanders away into dream and the wander must continue to be enlightened by the current step, not the one last taken, nor the one to come.
Good use of poetic form to draw in the reader to and through imagery and metered thought and the changing refrains.

I love the truth, clarity, and lyrical rhythm of this piece. So beautiful. It like a love song to the safe calm of the night where darkness allows us to unmask ourselves. Beautifully written. Definitely one of my favorite reads of all time. :)

I am sucked into your scenery. I see what you see, feel what you feel. My only suggestion: play with how the lines flow from one to the next in a few instances: "But the time is/The time dreams live." Lines like these break your flow, which is so lulling like the breeze in most plqces.

I love this piece. The simplicity of "I am me tonight". Such a powerful line, as dreams are where our minds create on the fly and anything is possible. Love it!!
