Livin' the Dream

This is from my book and based on a partial lyric a songwriter character came up with. I tried to flesh it out and the goal was to make it still sound like a song.

You know I’ve dreamed half my life away

And crashed hard when the fantasy

Didn’t turn out like I hoped it’d be

 

But those times seem so far behind me

Since good fortune seemed to find me.

Always wanted to share my dreams with someone

Never thought I would till now.

 

Without love my other dreams had no meaning

Now I thank Heaven that we dream together

I’m still a dreamer but reality’s so much better with you

Baby let’s keep livin’ the dream forever.

 

Love and romance were always elusive

And maybe now I know why.

Fate simply had other plans for me.

 

Before your love I was alone and uninspired.

On my own, disillusioned in every endeavor.

I’m still a dreamer but reality’s better than a dream with you

i am living this...so many dreams never fulfilled, never shared, sleeping alone with my mistakes...but now...sharing the dreams...well as many as we can have this late in life.

Well, he was pretty young when he wrote this...Me, I'm now more toward that late phase of life myself, but I'm fortunate to have somebody great to share the good things in life with. I'm glad you liked this, Jacob.

Your poetry pulls me in two directions.
One side of me embraces the love and calls out to live the dream and never wake up.
The other side of me warns me to remember I must know this dream even when I am awake or it will not last for me...
There is a codependency that can work and can be good in love relationships. There is also a wholeness to be found alone to bring a completed soul into a loving connection with another competed soul.

Anyhow... I enjoyed the poetry and you got my mind working. ;)
I am glad to read when a poet can write about feeling this way.

You certainly got my mind working. Mostly, though, this is simply about the joy to be found in having a companion to share the good things in life. You are so right that loving someone carries the danger of losing one's individuality and that expecting another to "complete" you just doesn't work.
