The Killer We Adore

The Killer We Adore

A Poem by Ashley Lytle
"

To those who know someone who is/has suffered with an addiction to alcohol.

"

Knife

Poison

Gun

It is all those things in one

They all lead to death

Not life

They all play the role of tearing us apart

Once united

Now we watch as the water rises

Trapping you on the other side

You put yourself there

Every hand that reached out

You shoved it away

And kept walking your path alone

Forgetting those you'd left behind

I remember that night

The night you left us in your car

It was dark and no one could be seen

I was terrified

I couldn't lose you

But I couldn't stay locked away

It is a knife

Tearing us apart

It is a gun

Leading to your death

Causing destruction is its game

It is poison

Killing you slowly

Stealing you away

I remember when I became the adult

And you took the role of child

I remember carrying you away

And others staring along the way

I remember feeling loss

Like I'd let my childhood slip away

And I remember their looks

As they questioned my safety standing next to you

The man who was supposed to be my protector

It is knife

It is gun

It is poison

But you may know it as alcohol

It splits us apart

It steals the life away

Before you know it it becomes your everything

It takes you away from us

It sends you away before your life's begun

You ignore it

You adore it

But one day it’ll get the spotlight

The fame that it craves

How many faces must be stained

How many families must wither in misery

It isn't some toy

It isn't just fun

It is a gun

It is a knife

It is not something to be thrown around

It demands respect

And the moment you don't

The punishment begins

Stealing not saving

Breaking not fixing

It is more than simple entertainment

It has the power to take your freedom away

You may think you have control

You may think you are strong

But you have no idea

What you’re giving away

With every sip that you take

Open your doors

Let it enter your life

But don't be surprised

If you wake up 6ft under one day

14, 17, 18, 47, 73

It doesn't care your age

When you disrespect it

It will take it’s revenge either way

Young or old

It makes no difference

The effects will remain the same

It hides within the silence

Blending in amongst the laughter

Waiting for it’s big day

When the world will cover its faces

Wishing they’d paid a little more attention

That they’d done something different

As we mourn those who were caught in the battle

A battle no one even saw happening

It is a nuclear bomb

And you're at the center

Your blaze grabbing at me

Pulling me into the misery

It is poison

It is knife

It is gun

It is an earthquake upon my home

As it tears us all apart

Look at me

Look at me

I am collateral damage

At the hands of alcohol

The killer we adore
