Look Up

Look Up

A Poem by Brandon Lee Burton

Just look up please one last glance
Do you see it there in the enclosing abyss
reaching out for you above your head?
It's reaching for you before you slip away
Before you die and lose all hope
of ever living and loving again
You say this hope is nonexistant anymore
But as I search the frigid waters
I can see it in your eyes and
It's burning bright
You don't really want to give up hope
But you don't know how to find your way back
Don't know if you have the strength to fight again
for everything that you hold dear
Alone you do not have to fight
See this hand that has searched
the whole ocean floor for you
is not searching on it's own
There are many that have joined the search with it
See look around you
at all of the hands reaching out
They reach out to drag you back to them
Because they care more than words can ever say
They want to make everything perfect
Even if it means the loss of their happiness
Back to the surface is a long journey
that you have to take
But not one you have to make on your own
Just when you thought you were all alone
and had given up hope and the fight for life
We came because we heard a heart stop beating
This heart is one of our own
Ever time it shatters we hear it and come to help
And ever time we are pushed to the sidelines
We are told that the heart needs to mend on it's own
Needs to know it can survive
But it doesn't have to or even need to do it on it's own
We are here for life just waiting for you to let us
help share this load that you bore on your back
This load that has brought you to your knees
More times than you want to count
But you have never had to carry it alone
Because there has always been someone willing to help you
A feeling that you must is going to be your downfall
Because this load will kill you
The weight is far too much for a single person to bare

This poem is really good. I'd touch it up a little--very little though. I think the way it was written has a very down to earth feel about it that's hard to replicate if you're trying to fancy it up with heavy prose and pretty metaphors and similes. It made me extremely curious to know what sparked the inspiration to write this piece, and painted amazinly Tim Burtonish pictures in my head. Great job.
