BITTER HERBS

BITTER HERBS

A Poem by Helena

BITTER HERBS

Perceive the wind

Whispering through time

Leaves thick on spindly branches

Weighed to earth heavy and moist

As if my tears had weighed them down.

Surging thoughts release

A sandstorm of emotions infusing the frostiness

Where a fire raged once and battles fought.

A fire lit with flints of passion soon died from

Lack of coal and cold, unattended...

melted, shapeless candles long gone out.

Restless spirits hovered in every corner

Taunting our thoughts, tearing our equilibrium apart

Destroying dreams and high expectations

The sea ebbs upon the sand washing away

Memories of a summer lost in love and fading

From view leaving a hazy space where I

Try to peer through the kaleidoscope of confusion

As I try to make sense of it all

This utter futility of wasted years

My heart lies on my low-burn fire, and quivers not

From lack of oxygen and caring to fuel this

Bitter herb of a life unloved

And unfulfilled

~

Beautiful write about loneiness, in the first stanz last line you have an extra (as) had weight them down.
Good luck in the contest. This should be a winner also. Tony

Just a peek into this dark corner of life is enough to make me feel overwhelmed and lonely. Very well-written and right on theme! Sharon

Such emotion and so eloquently worded!!
Depression... it invades each one of us and hopefully we write our way through our pains and wake up and begin one day with a smile upon our face and a spring in our steps.

A fine write, indeed!!
Thanks for sharing!
