Along The Fault

Along The Fault

A Poem by icelandicblue

Beneath the deepest drifts
there sits an avalanche of emotion
in stasis, frozen and waiting
for the ice to melt, biding time..

until the warm breath of rebirth blows

across the chords of hope
and fear in equal measure.
Cautious steps along the fault guide me
toward the vastness of the ice-imbued sea.

My breath clouds escape despite
the icy grasp of failure upon my throat
that moans and cracks beneath my resolve,
still the first notes of victory escape

from the space between parted blue lips.

This speaks to me of strength and hope despite a loss of some kind. Through the coldness of pain we somehow find a way out through human nature. Great writing.

And it's always an honor to receive your work.
This one went right to my library. I think you've summed up a lot of my sentiments with regards to why the Winter is my favourite season. It's a time of year that just demands introspection, as there is often little else to do on a snow day. I love the last stanza especially...awesome work.

WOW. there is that mix of fatality and hope in this piece that I find particularly appealing - because its kinda where I live. Love the metaphor of the pent up power behind what seems inert. And when she goes....it will be cataclysmic.

It is like that sometime, for sure. A very powerful write, Icyblue.

Hope and fear in equal measure... a precarious see-saw.
The future holds the rest of the song, and you have the lyrics within...

What a beautiful comment. Thank you Rita.
Wow! The poem is an incredible metaphor for how fragile and frightening life can be and it is done superbly. I especially liked the reference to "the vastness of the ice-imbued sea". I think that's because that vast expanse of sea always makes my stomach do a little back-flip. There is a fear of vastness in me. By adding the ice, and you really made my stomach uneasy there.

The reference to "parted blue lips" makes that last line so very visual and visceral. As good as the rest of the poem is, that is just such a powerful image to end with.

Lately it seems like that is all there is to to life, that fault above some ... frigid depths. We have to remember that though that 'icy grasp" has us all by the throat. It never cuts off hope. Because even when hope on one horizon fades, we need only turn a few degrees to find some other horizon. Life is cruel, it will give us a moment to mourn but then it demands that we move on.

This reminds me of Shel Silverstein who wrote.. “Listen to the mustn'ts, child. Listen to the don'ts. Listen to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me... Anything can happen, child. Anything can be.” Well done Ice! :)

Thank you so much Raymond and thanks for sharing Shel Silverstein. I love his work.
I like how this ties in with your pen name.
The space between two soft lips being cold and blue instead of warm and inviting...

Ah, as much as I hate the cold I relate to it on many levels. Thanks David.
I'm glad for the comments and review of others This is profoundly deep for me . So much meaning and ideas concealed in such short and simple lines which I think is what makes very good poets shines ...
