ANZACS

ANZACS

A Poem by Julie McCarthy (juliespenhere)
"

wROTE this last Anzac Day. We will remember them Lest we forget. xx

"
Our boys not quite yet men
barely out of school
some put their ages up
hoping to join their older siblings
in this their unknown raw fate
The mums and dads left waiting
the hankies soiled forever
with tears of love and pride
of missing their boys
even before they'd even
bade goodbye
and hope of safe return
But the telegrams they came
came at dead of night
came at break of days
came in noon sunlight
came to towns in land
dusty and rivers from afar
united in our stand
The prayers some of which were
answered
some of which too late
some were left unanswered and no
reason for their dire fate
Australians had such courage
Australia had bred our best
The boys who never returned
to those who love and missed them
those brave young men who
died so couragely in their
mateship and fearless
in their unknown fate
before them
Lest we forget
We will remember them.

Indeed a moving tribute to the stark brutality of war, especially the second world war. I thought New Zealanders were Anzacs too?

A very moving tribute that certainly pulls at you when you read. I could never for a second imagine the life the soldiers have and had endured. Brave men and woman to say the least. Thank you for this warning heartfelt write.

Thanks Troy for stopping by and reviewing
A fitting poetic tribute to your “brave young men” who fought so valiantly in WW2. Tears for the blood of your countrymen spilled and a generation of heroes culled but remembered always. They were giants. Moving and magnificent poem with great form, flow, cadence and rhyme. I feel your proud heart in your words. Well-done

Many wars and so many men and women lost to war. My Grandfather fought with the Australians in WW2. He told me. They could fight and they could drink. I agree Julie. Must remember the people who gave us freedom. Powerful and worthwhile words.
