This Thing Called Love

This Thing Called Love

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

This Thing Called Love
In loving memory
My beloved husband Dennis (aka Bub)
He taught me about this thing called love

What is this thing called love?
Many ask this question down life’s pathway
Many answers are given … but
Only one is the true combined in many little things

He can be counted on in times of trouble
He put my needs ahead of his
He always loved me unconditionally
He was there when I needed a shoulder to cry on

He was there when happiness abounds
He is there with sweet words and a loving touch
He shares all the good and all of the bad
He made my life a joy to live

He was there when grief ripped open my heart
His strength brought me through our son’s death
He cared for our children when my grief overwhelmed me
He brought me back to the land of the living

He still sees me as beautiful when old and gray
Love like this will last through all eternity
Even when death closes his eyes, his love is felt
His whispering words return to me in dreams

He can always bring a smile to my face
Even if it is just a memory picture in my mind
He holds my heart in the palm of hand
Our hearts are puzzled together intertwined

This thing called love lights up every fiber of my being
This thing called love burns deep into my soul
This thing called love gives me a reason to go on
Loving the children and grandchildren that came from this love

Our love is in the air I breathe
Our love is in my heart that still beats
Our love is in my daughter’s sweet voice
Our love is in my sons loving ways

Our love is in the blue eyes of our granddaughter
Our love is in the sweet smiles of our grandsons
Our love beats with every beat of their hearts
Our love surrounds me and gives me strength to live on

My heart is missing a piece to our puzzle … but
Will be found again in God’s heavenly realm
Our love will never fade with the passing of time
Our love is forever across the eons of time and space

Our love will collide in the stars as my eyes also close in death
Now you know what this thing called love is
It was my reason for being, my reason for living
His love made me complete

This is the most heartfelt piece that I have read on love. It is as pure as true love. Amazing the way love can cross the great divide between life and death. Beautiful tribute to your husband!
