The Tyrant

The Tyrant

A Poem by Nick Lybarger
"

The Tyrant oppresses expression, our soul is starved and destroyed.

"

We hide behind – masks we create,

Hiding ourselves from his piercing gaze

The Tyrant stares us down

If he penetrates the mask,

The darkness will rise.

Fear is a powerful weapon

Paralyzed, blinded, and dumb

We accept the Tyrant as our king, our god

Our mask a happy smile,

Our souls cry out in agony.

We fear the revelation of iniquity,

But we fail to see

Our iniquities make us human.

The Tyrant is invincible.

Seen through a piercing gaze,

The true Tyrant is revealed.

He wears a mask of steel

His soul is dead.

What will we become when

The mask starves the soul?

A sea of masks –

The human race extinct.

The Tyrant created us in his image,

Soulless shells, we walk the earth.

We thought we were hiding –

He saw us all along...

My first read through I came away with it being a critique of theism OR blind support of politicians, and after reading it again, I feel pretty certain about the theism theme behind it. It's aggressive, it's unforgiving, it's foreboding. The piece is, although I guess the same could be same for organized religion, so whether or not you intended for that to happen, I found it to be a cool little trait of the piece. I especially found the reoccuring mention of "masks" to be fitting, although I can't put my finger on why per say.

this was phenomenal!!! it's rare to come across a write that you don't immediately forget right after you read. There's a lot of truth to this and it's directed towards the reader in a casually contemplative manner :) fantastic job!!!!
