Drive

Drive

A Poem by Pete

"Life is grand, and so are its environments of Past and Future. Would the face of nature be so serene and beautiful if man's destiny were not equally so?" - Thoreau

Image result for man driving car arm leaning

Moving through decades.
Passing by life.
Not a care in the world.
Sitting in my car.
Way back in the seat.
One hand on the wheel.
Arm leaning out the window.
Not a care in the world.
Refreshing summer breeze reminds me I'm alive.
Favorite t-shirt and ripped jeans.
Cool, dark shades.
Everything looks like a T.V. show through the windshield.
Not a care in the world.

Radio is playing.
Everyone moving to the beat of the music.
Wheels keep the tempo.
Going nowhere in particular.
Not a damned care in the world.
Tobacco tastes especially good today.
Road is breathing.
Asphalt is alive.
Waiting for destiny to do its thing.
So what.
Past made me what I was.
Present is a blessing.
Future determines what I will be.
Doesn't matter what's ahead.
Only things I need are gas and more road.
One care in the world.
Just one.
... Drive ...

Author's Note

Pete
"I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself than be crowded on a velvet cushion. I would rather ride on earth in an ox cart, with a free circulation, than go to heaven in the fancy car of an excursion train and breathe a malaria all the way." - Thoreau

and sometimes we just have to take a break and think things over especially when we need to make a big decision which can affect us in one way or another there is a need not to think about anything and just sit and let the mind be blank even for a few minutes, perhaps that is the reason why we need to clear our heads from time to time. very well written friend

Pete, well penned. The video juxtaposes the mass transporting this man in a random path without his control in any way. The driver chooses, perhaps on a whim left, right or straight ahead. in both destination may be unknown.

thank you kindly for the encouragement! ... :)
You really captured the feeling we humans sometimes get in a car. Us, the road, the music, and a cigarette. Sometimes, that's all we need. :)

thank you flaco. an easygoing, relaxed write. sometimes we need that i think ... :)
I feel this exact same way about driving. Having grown up far from town & far from anything to do & without any media connections possible, driving was often our form of entertainment. I still get immense pleasure from going for a drive. Especially in my area, which is abundant with long lonely stretches of country road. The details you picked to paint this word picture are intriguing. Many of your details describe some of my own driving forays. I love-love-love the way you ended this (the last 4 lines)! Fondly, Margie

Had a relaxing mood Pete with the imagery, like I was there. It’s a sort of daydreaming experience driving behind the wheel going no where in particular and in all this time one feels free!

I like this, Pete, for the simple reason that most of us quite enjoy driving. But it certainly isn't as carefree as it used to be.

I'd rather sit on the pumpkin, too! ; )
