Go To Orlando

Go To Orlando

A Poem by Tristan E

june 12, 2016
orlando shooting
49 dead, 52 injured
lgbt community is heartbroken
my parents
democrats, but still homophobic christians
weep
my mother is heartbroken
by the man who texted his mother from the bathroom
he reaches for his mommy
but he can only reach so far
his phone screen blocks him
from the outside world
eddie justice
was shot in the bathroom stall of the pulse nightclub in orlando

june 15, 2015
mom, i have something to tell you
mom, i don't want you to get mad
mom, please please don't hate me
mom, i'm gay
mother, i am begging you to let me stay
mother, democrat, apparently homophobic
mother, apparently afraid of me
mother, she weeps
mother, she mourns the child she never wanted
mother, she mourns the child she never had
mother, she tells me that i am not her child

ironic that she weeps
agonizing sighs, shoulders shaking
for a man she never knew
who reaches out for his mommy
yet when i do the same
i am slapped
with the flat of her hand and the spit of her disgust
her words
pierce deeper than that bullet ever could

is it fair to say
that i am jealous of a dead man

Thanks for your wonderful writing. Until we stop being phobic of not just gay but any other culture which is not our own. Our world will not change. Thank you for sharing this in the wake of such terrible tragedy and know one should be afraid to be who they are. thanks. N.
