Lindsey did indeed enlist in the marines. The beginning of the story takes place in 2010. When you enlist in the military you are what is known as a poolee and poolees take classes the marines tell them to take for up to a year. In the story, the core is sending her to Berlin. Lovejoy and Kimbel are escorting her, to make sure she doesn't get into trouble.
