Death To The Social Networks

My mind does regularly ponder
on why people MUST look
changing profile pictures, status’s
on that devil face book

Why do I want to conform
to a site that isn’t free
people spend their lives on face book
your price your mortality

zombies to little games
and ads that have no appeal
people will you snap out of it
talk in person at least I’m real

I’m actually twenty one
I’m actually six foot two
I’m actually the sex I say I am
I’m physically in view

Relationships in chaos
“why has your status changed?”
causing more bad than good
leaving people more deranged

I’m often asked to create a profile
I’m afraid I just wont budge
People lose their jobs and partners
sorry doesn’t appeal to me
so who are you to judge?

I don’t want to talk to shadows
or people from my past
there are reasons I don’t keep in contact
otherwise our friendship would last

I don’t need thousands of people
and talk to only a few
I may only have fifty contacts
your lucky if one is you

I can see the benefits
this isn’t a hate campaign
I simply have a view on a site
that I believe drives people insane

I can understand for people like me
who often have to explain why?
Social conformity to this giant
or be it the overseeing eye

we don’t like to be the sheep
we like to live our lives
I want so see the world for myself
not give pictures to random spies

So death to all the networks!
so we can begin to breathe
live our lives to our own direction
mark I wont conform I wish you all take heed

i love the thoughts and anger behind this, the internet is a place where you can be someone you are not and to be enraged by that is normal and acceptable, though you're hypocritical in the same way as you know you do it yourself. your phrasing is magnificent, the rhyme adding a half-sing-song lilt to it that just made your anger that much more ridiculous. great work here, but is there a reason you're afraid to puntuate your pauses? i would be were there different meaning to glean from alternate punctuation than that that is technically correct, but as there's not one...? especially where there's a pause mid-phrase where you don't leave one?

I have actually lost friends before from social networks because it is easier to talk in person but most people hide behind screens. The amoutn fo deaths that have accured due to social network sites is bad and it just shows that most people on them are not who they say they are. So i totally get your point of view on this :) keep writing because your a great writer :)

Interesting. I've never read a poem quite like this one: the feeling is rather harsh and cynical. It's very literal at the same time, no room for obvious metaphors. I don't usually relate to poetry, but I myself despise facebook, so I can easily see what you're getting at.

Funny, this site replaced FB as far as where I spend free (and not so free) time. Beautifully written, and clearly stated. You really nailed this one. Great work, and I've come to anticipate nothing less.

Wow...hahahaha..:D this is so true. I really thought of those things and it really annoys me that we spend hours and hours chatting to shadows of people that we never met. SO true. :D

Brilliant. Love this poem. Who cares about their relationships, exactly.

'I’m often asked to create a profile

This is very true. I like facebook but mostly use it to post my writings. Created a few groups and got tons of feedback, but then it soon died, and now zilch. It's why I am now part of inkpop and writer's cafe. People actually read your work. You don't just have stories lying around talking to themselves. It's also great for events, to gather more people or to find out places to go that don't involve computers obviously.

Great poem and love the picture for it.

I LOVE this poem very well written and a great read. I agree although I do have a facebook I hate it did not use it for years till I found lost family so I use it to stay in contact with them and to post my poetry. Sometimes I feel like deleting it all together!!! Stick to your guns don't cave it I like that you don't have one

This is a good view, however I must disagree. Facebook has its advantages when used properly, for example. I have a lot of family who lives far away and this is a more convieniant way to stay in touch. It also bridges the gap between myself and the woman I love. Now you ar right people who get suckinto the so called popularity with their so-called superficial friends and their little crappy apps that your friends annoy you with ( You have a request pending at Cafe World :P ) Those are the things that trivializes Facebook and You are right, Those things about it need to end. I love this view and oppinion and you have penned it nicely in rhyme. I belive the primary thing to remember is that moderation on anything is always best. Take care and a 90/100. Would have been a 100 but I don't fully agree with the content.

...oh yes! What a fantastic verse... in fact i like the whole poem... Writers Cafe is the nearest i'll ever get to social networking... it seems to offer a lot more anonymity than facebook. Although, the whole psychology of people communicating via an electronic presence in a virtual reality world (especially when they find 'lovers' online) just fascinates me.

ah - i love it - i have often considered deleting my facebook account but since it is the only way to keep in touch with my family in Ecuador - i keep it...

i had a bigger problem with myspace - not so much facebook - sometimes the drama starts here at the cafe....but i know how to detect the attention addicts really quick
