The Father

The Father

A Poem by Abhishek Asthana
"

Truly said, " Never is a man more of a man than when he is the father of a newborn. "

"

Could we put a name to a nostalgic role,

Naively by our heart and dispirited soul,,

Who propelled you out of social scuffles,

One who allowed you to discern purposeful goals,,

Who brought luscious candy after allegiance of the midnight,

Who did onerous labour to make your future bright,,

When you were forging ahead with your adolescence,

Your roguish deeds upset him nevertheless his eyes expressed delight,,

You kids are indestructible pillars while father portrays a fort.

Likewise years elapsed, that beloved oldie needs more of your support,,

Never ridicule his endeavours rather show reverence for sacrifice

As far as his ultimate wish, albeit he would ask for your comfort in heaven's court !!

Author's Note

Abhishek Asthana
Tried hard to depict a story of a father who sacrificed a lot for his children and now it's a turn of those kids who are supposed to be adaptable to understand the elderly character of their father.

you have absolutely described my father to a "T," Abhishek,
I could have written these exact words to him...and did write similar ones. He was a gem.
He is gone but I appreciate him more than ever, now.
thanks for this wonderful tribute to Fathers...they need to be thought of with a smile.

Very lovely poem. I wish I knew my father but I have no memories. And I have only heard the bad things about him.

You have depicted a family system where father plays the key role in collaboration with the mother for upbringing their children. The task of parenting is composed of many challenges. The participation of the children in the efforts of parents make a fruitful and happy family. The children eventually make their own family and repeat the same cycle. While the children strive to develop their own family, some may forget their parents' role which is very painful. In fact, old age is the second childhood of human being. In the second childhood the children should provide care to their parents as they supported them in their early age and until they grew up as income earning personnel. This is a mutual situation. If the children do not take care of their parents at their old age,the children may also face the same fate when they will turn old.
Dear Abhishek,I mentioned about both parents in my review, though you focused on the father because negligence to father usually also accompanies with the mother.I appreciate your conscientious write up.
This poem may inspire many people to behave properly to their father and mother in their helpless old age. Finally,I like to present a Bangla song which perfectly depicted the injustice experienced by the helpless parents in their old age.The song is,"Briddhashram"(Old age home) sung by Nachiketa Chakraborty which may be found in this link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3z4dnIQMVo

A fitting tribute to fathers; an institute of love and sacrifice. Some fathers skirt their duties but the vast majority uphold them. We have to honor them and cherish them as much as we can. You are wise indeed.

That's really true...Parents are godsend to children... Thanks for a read and review !!
It's a really beautiful description of a father's struggle to make his children's life better . It's really sad that people are forgetting their father's role and treat them in a very bad way .
This poem is an eye opener for all of us to treat our fathers well with all the care and happiness that they deserve...
Good work and thoughts.
Keep it up

I agree with you truly. And this a thing which is needed to be done .
A father, like a mother is a loving creature. But as it is in his nature, he keeps his love tucked away, like papers in a briefcase.
A beautiful and exquisite write. Strong enough to remind us all of our fathers.

I thought of the role of my own father as I read your lines. I adored him. He was a great Dad to me and my four siblings. A provider, a teacher, a protector and most loving. He died before he reached old age, before I had the chance to repay him for all he did for us. Your lovely lines brought him back to me this evening. Thirty years gone now.

Yes, as we grow older, we feel the responsibility of caring for those who cared for us. Now my children care for me in harmony. The Circle of life is worthy of Love. Truly, Pat
