A Broken Promise

A Broken Promise

A Poem by Amelia May
"

I wrote this poem for a friend of mine who was recently hospitalized for a terminal illness.

"
You said you didn't want a balloon,
Or a stuffed teddy bear by your head.
So I chose this, a form of writing,
And wrote you a poem instead.

We made a promise, many years ago.
And I am sure you remember it well.
We said that if one of us doesn't make it to heaven,
Then we'll both just burn in hell.

Now, honey, I am sorry to inform you,
Of why this promise will surely fail.
You see, you clearly have a pair of angel wings,
And I have the devil's tail.

I am breaking this promise, and I am sorry for that.
But I am surely going to burn in the fiery pit.
And you tried to change me, but I failed to let you.
So I won't drag you down, you don't deserve it.

Our memories are what will always be remembered
And all the pranks we did will last in our minds forever.
So go, get past those pearly gates.
I don't want to see you in hell. Not today. Not ever.

Sleep well, my precious butterfly.

Author's Note

Amelia May
This one was really emotional for me to write, but my friend insisted that I share it because she enjoyed it a lot. No condolences necessary. She made her peace and lived happily. That's all that matters.

A touching poem, thank you for sharing, Amelia.
I guess these are things that happen in a human's lifetime. If there's a heaven or a hell, I wonder, but if I could choose the moment I die, I prefer heaven, even if I'm not an angel, far from it. :) Rudi

Your welcome! :)
I love the poem, and I love the way the font zooms in and out. Everything about this piece is so delicately written, I just want to treasure it. Good job, Amelia.

Wow Amelia. This is so touching and far different than the morbid chapter I just read. You are truly a great writer to be able to accomplish such changes in writing style.
