Individuals Survived Individually

Individuals Survived Individually

A Poem by Anand Sehgal

You and me became intimate,
so quickly yet so effortlessly .
Within a few nights we shared a common bed,
the same food plates,
the ward-robe, the mirror;
In a unified domain, we almost became one .

Bewildered, I noticed ,
our nightmares never sat together to
soothe each other;
They kept their insecurities intact,
deep inside,
concealed to their own.

My concerns remained mine,
yours remained yours;
they never became ours.

Thus the individuals survived
individually,
and the kinship succumbed.

It would seem that though individuals must remain individuals, regardless of the relationship between them, that these two have shared too little of themselves - their defenses have never been lowered, in spite of their intimacy. So there was never a true union - sad, but sometimes people have been hurt too many times to trust another with their innermost selves. Another very intelligently written yet emotionally stunning poem, Anand. I am always impressed by your work.

In order for a relationship to thrive, interests have to blend, lives have to be totally shared....the good and the bad. Unfortunately, when two are still separate even in their togetherness, the relationship is doomed to fail. Very well written. Lydi*

A relationship is just like a sapling, isn't it Lydi ?

Absolutely true, my friend! Lydi**
i found your other poem interesting...but i couldn't connect with it like with this one.

there is physical here, that part of the relationship is a breeze..body-mates...but soul-mates?

emotionally, they just can't let down their guards,either one...there needs to be trust in a relationship and more than just physical for it to maintain...

i like the same line, K. Louis did...best in a very good poem.

...and how much more there could have been if these individuals were willing to let their guards down, neither will know and perhaps it wasn't meant. But is there always a purpose? Surely, there are always lessons to be learned in every connection made..even the ones that stay hidden on the surface...

"Our nightmares never sat together to soothe each other;" -- Great line!

Yes, this is a lesson I have learned/learning. The importance of laying yourself vulnerable and not judging those who do so for, and I mean for, you. Oh the virtue that is true bravery. Well-penned piece.
