![]() The Ancient One (Creation of the Zulu)A Poem by Miss Marie Riorden.![]() Project for my Myths & Legends class. I decided to do a poem. . . since of course I'm by myself instead of in a group![]() Created from reeds, Oh Ancient One You who have made the moon and sun You are so great, oh Unkulunkulu From that seed you have grew To make the stars, the sky, the green grass To make man-kind, and the humble jack-a*s You’ve given us names, you’ve given us life You’ve showed us fire, and hunting with a knife Oh Ancient One you even taught us to grow food To build shelters from the oak tree wood You’ve picked the healers, the mothers, the wives From the Uthlanga, you’ve saved our lives Now you rule, the first of man And knowingly we haven’t a life span Immortal we may be, until that day You sent the chameleon on his way His task was to tell us we shall live forever That we needn’t worry about Death, we’d stay together But impatient Unkulunkulu grew as days passed by And he planned to send a lizard, speaking of demise Its’ task was to tell the villagers of Death’s coming While still, the chameleon was still running The sun sprang up, and the lizard set off fast And not before long, the chameleon had been passed The lizard kept moving, heading for the village That village that at his message, Death would pillage As the lizard delivered his news, he left quickly on his
feet The chameleon’s message of life had been beat Death now visited the village, the Zulu suffered the
consequence Never will Death leave, because of the chameleon’s lack
of sense. © 2011 Miss Marie Riorden.Author's Note
