ANTICIPATION

ANTICIPATION

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

what to expect

"

I hasten to open the door

fling my wet towel over the kitchen chair

next, I unfasten the telegram

and quickly note the word “shot”

while I continue to read to the end

Fiancé shot in abdomen and right foot

Stable condition. Will remain in hospital.”

My mouth opens with a cough

I feel flush and fragile

no word from my soldier in weeks

poor darling, he must be in torment

I am so prideful of his accomplishments

and long to channel my fancies to him straightaway

yet I must show my composure

I ought to be with him at hospital

support him, care for him, treasure him

tis an overwhelming task

to obtain all the particulars for my sojourn

oh! I just aspire to float on a cloud to whisk

me to his bedside

Upon catching my breath

I shall initiate a plan

a vast ocean to traverse

the fastest ship I shall book without delay

It's so difficult to hear something bad happening to your beloved. Always too hard to resist, and if you're far from them, it's like the same damage they are going through. Both suffers, it they physically, then you emotionally.
Being distant, prayers work.
Hoping of a happy ending.
A good one of among those I had gone through.
Thanks for the art.

Indeed it is!! moments spent together are precious
Thank you dear friend.
Warmly, B
I bloody knew it! The longer war goes on, the more chance of you getting hurt by it increases. This wouldn't happen nearly as much if they just took my advice to make all wars one week on and one week off on holiday to recuperate. But would they listen? No! They just threatened to shoot me if I didn't leave immediately!
And then there's you, or your character, stuck with the fear of an official document that you don't want to open and fear the worst even before you do, only to open it and the fear becomes real, as you rarely stop to think "Well l, at least he's alive" and go straight from neutral to fifth gear panic, before you know it.
I'm telling you, you'd think they'd have figured this out themselves by now, but war can be bad for your health. They should set those flippin health and safety experts to war, just to show them how lethal it can be!
I bet my idea of one week on and one week off makes more sense now! 😊

You are most welcome.

WW2. It was a vastly different world from this but you keep presenting micro events from that era like cinematic images. What must it have been like to depend on telegram messages? These days, email does the job. Even you and I are exchanging instant messages on writerscafe. Whao! Yet what you bring to the forefront is common everyday people. They fight wars, they love, they get separated from loved ones, they wait with bated breath for news, they swim, they fret and more. I think you'd be good at writing a memoir.
Wishing you the very best from my corner of the globe.

Now I can feel the clock ticking and the hours passing. Will she get there, is this a happy ending or a sorrow filled conclusion? Or, this a conclusion at all or a new beginning? Beautiful my friend.

The news no one wants to hear, but he is stable. Yes, in all haste get to him so she can support him in his recovery. He needs her to lift him, to love him. Thoughts flying around my mind as to how she will find him. Apprehension as well as anticipation dear Betty.
