HAPPY NEW YEAR? THE HORIZON

HAPPY NEW YEAR? THE HORIZON

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

the horizon as we fear it

"

In my pen and paper universe

freedom prevails

inspiration intensifies my thoughts

I scribble until my brain exhausts

fantasies heighten my legacy

the moon still smiles

radiant sun bathes me in light

stars shimmer with lust

Yet in the New Year frozen clouds

tell a different story

my ink ceases to flow

paper dissolves into thin air

words congeal in timeless expanse

moods darken to an endless pit

the universe is oppressive and barren

thoughts distress over a lost society

we all look homologous

we are all possessed

our lips sealed with blue paint

Ivory black lies envelop us into fear

Dear Pete you’re too kind! But I love it! Thanks so much for your upbeat review!

This one had an almost bipolar effect. The first verse is full of creative energy, the universe is a place of inspiration and freedom, and then, suddenly, the scene changes. The ink ceases to flow, the words congeal, and it sounds like a full scale depressive episode is setting in. The last line is especially forbidding. What is it about the new year that has caused such a turnaround?

Brilliant, brilliant painting, Betty.. it talks to the viewer. Your words speak of course, perhaps capturing, perhaps examining the varying dark and light of time, of a journey that in many ways fights Man's occupation with and in the movement of life,

' the universe is oppressive and barren
thoughts distress over a lost society
we all look homologous
we are all possessed
our lips sealed with blue paint'

Kind of a stark and barren feeling holds the second half of this chilly reminder that, just because the year is new, that does not mean fears of the old will subside...I think. : ) Love the poem and the painting. Very cool.

Thank you my dear friend, I fear the worst, but hope I’m wrong! Warmly B
I read this morning that scientists, ya, them guys, have become aware of a great storehouse of methane moving beneath the Arctic ice, possibly due to emerge and add to the effects of global warming
Your impressive artistic image may be soon nothing but very cold water
