I'll Wait For You

I'll Wait For You

A Poem by Hayllie
"

Just words that are the start of a story

"
The sun was setting,
brilliant, golden rays cascading over the airstrip like a french painting.
Cries filled the ears of those around, as soldiers took their places in the jet. The grace period was over,
the enemy still advancing. Down time was at an end. Now as the engines began screaming, a reminder of
the hell that waited for them across the safety of the states.

Bowdey swallows hard, for he knows what lies ahead. What began as a way
to honor his country, and be something great; was now a game that was no longer fun.
Looking down into the eyes of the beautiful young girl, he had come home on leave for, he could see the desperation.
She begged him to stay, to be with her forever; but a torn heart couldn't pull him away from his life as a Marine.

"Please don't leave." She pleaded. He forces a smile, because he has to be strong for her,
but reality is an ugly truth. He doesn't want to go as much as she doesn't want him to. Taking a final look behind him at the waiting jet, he smiles down at her. "When this is over, I am all yours." She doesn't even smile. She can't. The pain is unbearable. "Promise me you will come home? I love you. I need you here." A delicate hand touches her stomach and the realization
hasn't surfaced with him; but he gently kisses her. "I will come back to you." "Captain it's time. Let's go!"
He kisses her one last time, and boards the jet. The tears she had forbidden to earlier fall, now stain her cheeks.

Now she stands at the alter. What once was, a white gown and him in his dress uniform.
Now a hollow reminder laying in the casket. Still dressed in his Military best, but simply an empty shell.
Paying the ultimate price, to give her the freedom she deserved in an amazing country. Some gave all.
Her cheeks still stained with freshly shed tears, she had come to know, as the preacher signaled the choir.
Gone now, but never forgotten. A heart of honor now waits at the gates with their baby in tow. In loosing one, she lost both.
Now her pain is easier because she knows where he is; and he's holding their baby.
"I'll wait for you. Until the day I can meet you at the gate. My hero. My love. My everything. Enjoy our girl until I get there to
I'll wait for you."

This reminds me a lot of Carrie Underwood's music video for, "Just A Dream." I loved the tragic twist at the end, and that she is strangely comforted by the fact that her man and their baby are together in heaven.

Dear Hayllie, opportunity for a powerful story. Being a soldier's love. Can end in great sadness. I went to three funerals of good friends I served with. They left wife and children. I look forward to the repost my friend.

You are welcome dear Hayllie.

You certainly devised a captivating poem here Hayllie.. I am sure you are more than capable of turning it into a splendid story too... I love the dated feel you introduced at the very beginning and managed to maintain right until your poetic conclusion...

understandable...
i think of World War II with this one...and the old black and white documentaries about it.
The tragedy of war...from the altar back to the altar in a box...total sadness...and for what?
No wins in war. this poem is so moving...i like how you mix the tragic war terms, unsettling, with the romantic posturing of French paintings.
