Fly Away

Fly Away

A Poem by C.M. Waters

I am a bird
Trapped in a cage
Looking out the window
At the wide open sky
Wising that I
Could break free
And fly out to the horizon

Suddenly
A girl rushes in
Opens my cage
And carries me
Over to the window.
I spread my wings
And jump out into the open
Finally breaking free
Of that entrapment
I had grown to loathe

BAM!

My right wing is shot.
I cannot fly.
I begin to fall
Faster and faster
Plummeting towards the ground
Feet away from my death.

I wish I were back in my cage.
