Through Eva's Eyes

Through Eva's Eyes

A Chapter by Carolyn
"

Annie's little sister, who is 6-7 years old.

"

Mummy and Daddy said that we had to move soon, but it was too late loud bangs and people screaming had already begun. Annie was hugging me and she hugged tighter every time a bang went off. Mummy went off to find daddy who went into the kitchen for our passes to move to France. We’ve turned out every light in the house, it’s very dark.  I tried to hug Annie she started to crawl, maybe she spotted Mummy. Than it turned into a fast crawl, it was hard to keep up then. We reached the kitchen and she stopped I grabbed her hand. As I peered around from behind Annie’s back I saw four people there was Mummy, Daddy and two soldiers... I think.  Annie held me close as the soldiers said something I looked into Mummy’s eyes they had water in them. Annie pushed me back. I looked to daddy he had fallen to the ground, I went to help him but Annie pulled me upstairs into the bathroom, and locked the door, outside I  heard Mummy shouting,

‘No!’

Something bad was happening but I don’t know what or why. We went to church and we ate what Jews should eat, at least I think we did. I turned around and looked at Annie she had tears in her eyes

‘I Love You’

She smiled and held me close she whispered back,

‘I Love You Too’

I hugged her back as she wiped away my tears there was a bang downstairs, she pushed me off and ran to the window, she looked down than at me.

‘Jump’

I looked at her, what did she mean ‘Jump’ the door made a loud bang,

‘Jump!’

I ran to her she picked me up and put me on the windowsill and kissed my cheek and pushed me down.
As I got out of the bush I saw children and their families running into the forest as I gazed into the trees when Annie landed, I grabbed her hand tight and pulled her towards the forest like she had pulled me up the stairs. Although she hesitated, I pulled again she let go. I watched for awhile and heard noises from the house, I went to ask Annie but she didn’t answer. I went through the door that led to the kitchen where Daddy laid. I hugged him he didn’t move. He must’ve fallen asleep he’s always doing that; I laid down next him and held his hand. Slowly I started to fall asleep when I heard something. I sat up it was coming from upstairs; I crept up the stairs slowly. They didn’t sound like soldiers, I opened the door, the man looked at me. He made a gesture for me to come forward, looked to the ground and stepped back. He started to stand up, I shut the door and ran downstairs. I tripped over the stray pieces of furniture. As I wiped the tears from my eyes, I felt a hand grip onto my shoulder. I looked behind me, it was the soldier I stuttered, I tried to go back to find Annie but he chucked me over he’s back and walked down the road. As I pounded my fists against his back I saw Annie. I tried to tell the man to put me down but he wouldn’t. Ignoring me he put me in the truck with the other children, I tried to get out but I was too scared. I heard the truck start; I saw Annie stop and a soldier talk to her. I cried out to her to save me but she couldn’t hear me.
