Phobias

Phobias

A Poem by Vertigo Cat1111
"

We’re all afraid of something. Whether it be the end of the world, spiders or something completely irrational.

"
Phobia
Why do you do this to me?

Every night
My throat locks up tight
This type of anxiety has a bite
I can’t explain
And I can’t get it to go away
No matter what I do

Phobia phobia
No one else can see
The sense of fight or flight
It’s not something I can tame
And I begin to sway
It’s my mind that feels bruised
I’m gonna lose

I’ll ignore you for a while
But here comes that bile
Rising in my throat

Phobia
What am I supposed to do?

Phobia

I’ll do anything to get rid of you

Phobia

And there’s no one that can come to my rescue
Because
I know it’s silly
And it’s so stupid
And it’s irrational
I feel so clueless

Phobia

I’ll do anything to get rid of you.

Dragonflies, or dandy long legs. That's what gave me terrors when I was little. The sounds of their wings and legs flicking against the walls freaked me out. Under the covers screaming for my Dad, who would bolt up the stairs like grease lightning. Only when I faced up to my fear did it go. A boy in my class showed me how to capture one and hold it in my hands. The tickling was the weirdest sensation, but the fear went. Your poem just took me back there.

Irrational anxiety captured well in its tormenting insistence. There's no reason I should fear sharks but I look closely at puddles and mop buckets for any Macos or Blacktips that might have wandered in to the shallows. A great poem
