new and shiny

new and shiny

A Poem by Crystal Overmeyer-Birmingham

In our youth
we sat on hills
Staring down at life
all the was shiny and new
The lies that were taught to us
sticking to our lips, tongue and fingers
Smoking in half truths and coughing over the fumes
The world version of the so called "Good Life"
Too old to fake it
To young to care
we owned that spot of the earth
flying our flags high and unapologetic
we stepped on crumbles plans
and bruised dreams
we lit life to the fullest and
threw the butts on the ground
only vaguely aware of these decisions
would effect tomorrows realities.

Crystal, I'm floored. I really don't like to quote lines from the things I review, but I really wanted to with this piece. But I quickly realized I'd be quoting half the lines, dissecting every line and idea. I can't do that to anyone's work, it would seem almost vulgar. This piece is not for dissection or in-depth analysis. This must be read and absorbed as a whole entity viewed holistically. Viewing life from high vantage points,, coming to conclusions when the observation dictates that revisions mush be calibrated into the equation...a reassessment carelfully filtered through the glass prism of what may or may not be real. That's a hell of a meaning...film to be shown on the side wall of a mountain, a drove-in experience in color. And in HD. Great write! take care...dan

Youth so different, so true. Looking back, always. We learn so much in youth but sometimes dont know until later in life. Well done Crystal and using the references of smoking, original.

About
I am a poet by nature. Words just speak to me and color my world. I away think of poetry as painting with phases, just as vibrant and life giving as they are messy and complex. more..
