The Mirror

The Mirror

A Poem by Dianne S Penfold
"

Lets love ourselves a little more.

"
The mirror beckons to me again,
"Hello old friend" it urges me
To closer step toward it then,
It stabs my self confidence.

A battle begins and I must fight,
As it criticizes my every flaw.
I must prove that I am right.
So I up my defenses even more.

"I am beautiful in spite of my blemishes,"
My words out loud like an arrow flies
Towards my reflection as it grimaces
Now arming itself with hurtful lies.

"You are not only ugly but fat too.
You are the wrong color skin
and there is nothing you can do."
It tells me that I must be thin.

It makes me feel like I'm no good
If only I was more this, less that.
If only I could do what others could.
Its words cut deep, so I get serious.

No! I shout in confident boldness.
I lean towards the image
on her head I plant a kiss.
You are much more than society says.

You are beautiful in all your ways.
Unique, Gorgeous, Incredibly smart.
You are the conqueror of many a heart.
Your smile puts the brightness of moonlight to shame.

Your amazing eyes do the same.
The mirror now shocked stood still, defeated.
Overcome by the power of self love
I hugged myself and rose above.

I enjoyed this poem! No one sees themselves the way others do! I never believed my reflection. It always got into my head and played bad magic tricks on me! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder not in the eye of the mirrored image! Best Wishes! Well written

This is a poem of a generation. there are musicality hitches in two lines, but the overall message and progression and that finale - killer! Absolutely fantastic! Well freaking done!

Self image is a battle our children face. If we cab teach them to find beauty in others it will help them to find it in themselves.
This is an excellent struggle of freedom.

Thank you, and you are absolutely right.
Inspiring indeed. I think all of it starts first in our own heads and we let that fear of not being accepted in society take over us...
Nice, positive write.
