Mama Why?

Mama Why?

A Poem by Graveyardfuck
"

A poem about my mom...

"
You hurt me, Mama,
Every time you take his side.

"He's only eight" you say,
Will you be saying that when he ends up in prison?

My house is not a home,
It's Hell,
Where you torture me.

I cry and I cut because of you, Mama,
But you blame my scars on boys.
"They're worthless!" you say.

Mama,
You make me feel worthless...

I wish I could tell you the truth,

But you'd just find some way to turn it back on me.

When I'm 18,
I swear I'm leavin', Mama
Cause I can't stand it anymore.

I'm sorry, Mama,
I tried to be your perfect princess,
But life changed me.

Sober drunk,
I'm sorry,
But I'm not your little girl no more.

I'm growing up,
And becoming stronger.

And one day, I swear
I'll hold up the world with strong arms,
Like Atlas.

But not for you, Mama.

I don't want to be ungrateful,
I don't want to be unkind.

But you cannot control me,
No more,
Mama.

I read this as if it was a really young kid forced to a maturity unnatural for their age. A really inspirational piece, it gives a perspective most are ignorant of. Well done, a really good piece.

i really enjoy the sense of soul you portray here; a great symbol of a bittersweet independence and separation from anything that holds this character back. one part i found slightly cliche was
"My house is not a home,
It's Hell,
Where you torture me."

this may be nitpicky, but i think your character has more to say about this issue. these words don't do the feelings portrayed in the poem justice. comparing a home to hell is slightly overdone.

as the rest of the poem went on though, i thought you steered away from cliches beautifully, and overall i really enjoyed reading this and can definitely relate to how awful a parent can be and how inferior they can make a child feel. hits close to home- great work.

There is a species of bird, ducks I think (I saw it on TV), they nest high up on sheer cliffs. When the young have hatched and out-grown the nest they jump... often hundreds of feet; some land near the water's edge and some upon the rocks. It's amazing to see those that hit the rocks, bounce and then scramble toward the water and join their siblings that are following their mother to finish the rest of their lessons before becoming fully functional and independent. A controlling parent is either overly fearful and protective or distracted by their own lives; which is it here? 100/100

Pretty strong poem you've written here. Radiating emotions through my screen, gives me the feeling of being the actual person thinking this. Shouldn't it be blame in the fourth strophe instead of blaim? Other than that, good poem.
