Beaten Down

Beaten Down

A Poem by John Duprey
"

Have you ever been kicked when you were down? Yes, and humanity is the cause.

"

They judge you

They watch you.

Watch your every step.

Your every move.

They hurt you.

They show you no remorse.

They make you fear for your life until you can’t handle it anymore.

They tear you down, they break you down until you’re brittle.

And when they know you’re vulnerable, they kick you when you’re down.

They make you wish that tomorrow would never come.

In reality, they can be good, but very few are humble enough.

Most days, they prey on their next target.

They attack you until they have succeeded at their goal.

  Killing you.

They hate you.

They chose you.

Why? Because you’re an easy target.

Feeding their obsession is a game of pain for you.

They change you.

An outgoing kid soon to be a depressed mental case.

Soon, you can’t take it anymore.

All their attacks on you soon turn into tears.

Tears that show that you’ve had enough.

After you’re gone, they won’t care.

They have new prey in mind.

These creatures are ruthless.

They are,

Your peers.
