what I want

what I want

A Poem by Emily B

As I am a woman and changeable,
I cannot tell you what I need--

not flowers or jewels or sweet perfume.

Today, I want the sun and moon and stars.

Tomorrow, I may only want to hear
the quiet hum of your voice.

Tonight, I may ask you to move a mountain.

By morning's light, I might need a loving word
or two.

Don't think I would ask you to change for me.
You'll do the way you are for now.

But, tomorrow--well,

by then,
I may change my mind.

A very clever take on the old chestnut about women being fickle--but there's more than just one-note cleverness here. As the learned Mr. Simm states, the flow and cadence in the piece are excellent, the result of fine craftsmanship, and the interplay between the cosmic and everyday is handled expertly. Just a very fine piece of work.

I LOVE this! so true! the ending is too cute for words. "you'll do the way you are for now" made me smile - it's something I've actually thought but haven't had the guts to say out loud. Your writing is inspirational to me. I'm going to go check out your Kaleidascope Chronicles. Thanks for sharing!

And yet, we still pursue. Much as leopards behind graceful but lightning fast gazelles ... always just a half-stride behind our zig-zagging intended.

This is a lovely example of your quiet, reflective style.

Wow is this sooooooo true. I love that you wrote this because it says what many of us men are thinking without the sarcasm we would use to describe it. This is really a great little piece that I think many people would enjoy reading. Very well done.

lol. this made me laugh. you take a stereotype and take the bite out of it with your gentle self effacing humor. we are human and yes women do have their ways. i like the seasaw "today... tomorrow" pace of the piece.
