The Empty Chair

The Empty Chair

A Poem by George David Hope

                                                                              THE EMPTY CHAIR
A little girl peeps through the curtain
At the people waiting for the show
But she cannot see her daddy
Where he is she doesn't know
He promised that he'd be there
On the phone the other night
He's let her down so many times before
It really isn't right
Her teacher shouts "Places please
It's time for us to start"
How could daddy be so cruel
How could he break her heart
As the play gets under way
She can't miss the empty seat
Why can't he make the effort
It really would be neat
She found it hard to say her lines
With tears in her eyes
You'd think that she'd be used to
All her daddy's lies
A mile away is an accident
And a car that's overturned
Flames just extinguished
It's driver badly burned
His final words still echoing
As the angels took him away
In the ears of a paramedic
Something about his daughters play

Thanks for your comments regarding this poem. I'm really glad you enjoyed it
Very nice and good twist.

I dealt with it with having an abusive alcoholic stepfather and sexually abusive mother who was narcissistic. I rarely went to school and when there were family events like fairs or field trip, my parents never came.
