Humble Company

Humble Company

A Poem by Hayley

Any relic of the dead is precious, if they were valued living.

-Emily Bronte

If a soft light fell on my desk with the humble company of a poem

I could claim a peace of mind

And beautiful friends who stuck their heads in ovens

And starved until the next season in a window-ridden asylum

Humid pale and unborn

I know they thumbed their existence with typewritten fingers,

A restless grace similar to a drunken shiver,

And I should let lie what is gone and dead

But I feel them in my bones

Yes the influence of minds on other minds, it' s quite delightful really. But you have to wonder, their is a certain perversity of their legacy, the suicide martyrs, the dramatic types who let mental illness creep in.

To imitate that would be silly right? Nice to see you around Haley.

enjoyed doubly much the second time around
Every poet and writer knows loneliness...but loneliness need not be a precursor to depression and certainly not suicide. So many great artists have been lost from Van Gogh to Hemmingway, very saddening.

Heavy write. Brilliant too. Those who suffer tend to make the best art.

Well I see immediately the Sylvia Plath reference. I am afraid however, that the second reference eludes me ... a bit of research says Christopher Smart? ... maybe? I certainly feel the impact of a brilliant closing line. I guess I get a bit lost in Stanza two though ... which I am sure is more of a commentary on my inability to make a connection, than on the quality of your construct. If you can help me out a little, I'l be grateful.
