Misty memories of love

Misty memories of love

A Poem by Gee
"

Will make sense to some

"
Slowly, as if by magic,
words started to form in the condensation
on the pane by her now never used chair.
Words written when in solitary,
when human touch deemed dangerous,
so life threateningly so that contact not allowed.
At first, to her, it was a game,
a game in second childhood enjoyed,
touching glass, mouthing words, blowing kisses,
but this turned to frustration, tears, confusion,
confusion in a mind already confused
and in the process of " deleting" 85 years
of life, living, memories.
They, the carers, deemed regular visits to distressing,
so weekly became fortnightly, became monthly,
until the inside face no longer recognised the outside face,
and the visits then became to distressing for both
and so stopped, as did a frail and broken heart...
Slowly, as if by magic,
on the pane by her now never used chair
"I love you" and a shakily drawn heart appeared.

Such a cruel end to a life, where not only the sense of that life is slowly rewired and discarded, but the dignity of that life well lived erodes too, leaving only confusion and suffering, that are senseless to the viewer, but no doubt terrifying to the sufferer.
My own Ma no longer recognises me and I haven't been able to see her in 2 and a half years, as she thinks I'm her dead brother, who she still remembers is dead.
Excuse the language, but it is truly a mindfuck for all concerned.
You painted this one so delicately Gee, when reliving it probably wanted you to snap the brush. A beautiful ending and gift amongst the sensesless of it all.

Dementia is a grim thing to watch. The person so long known disappears, replaced one who remembers little. I used to work in a chronic disease hospital and I saw it happen many times. This poem has the sound of someone who has seen it in a loved one.

It absolutely makes sense to me...Went through this with both my parents.
They are gone now, but that chair still sits in the window of my mind.
