The Politician

A satirical look at those who purport to represent us.

Babble to the rabble,

Politician Man,

Lies, lies, lies,

Catch me if you can.

Look at my statistics,

Believe me, it's all real,

Just do what I tell you,

Don't tell me what you feel.

Black is white,

And white is black,

Watch the hand I'm holding out,

Not the one behind my back.

Judge me by what I say,

Not by what I do,

I'm far too important,

To be criticized by you.

It's just coincidental,

That all my friends are rich,

There's no such thing as patronage,

And that nepotism was just a glitch.

I don't fiddle my expenses,

I really need that private jet,

My mansion's not in my riding,

But my small apartment is, you bet!

Those twenty second sound bites,

Are perfect for my attention span,

But it's those sympathetic photo ops,

That make my ratings scan.

Don't go to that other party,

There's no point, you see,

Their lies might be different,

But they don't tell them as well as me!

This one was really awesome! Even though the rhyming was a little off, I think the rhythm was really clever, not to mention the sort of mocking, dark tone it carried. It's also clever because it pertains to current events. Another aspect I really liked was how it hits right to the core and doesn't dance around the topic with pretty words. Ironically, this is more effective than what the news and press tell--everything there is so "politically correct" while this is really clear and concise. One last thing I found interesting was how it was not so much poem-like rather than being more song-like. I.e. if you slapped a beat onto this and adjusted this a little, you could make it a song/rap. In other words, it's very different from other poems which is really cool. No criticism :)

Thanks again, ShadeSlayer. You are absolutely right about its song-like quality. In fact, I wrote it as a song then changed it a little to make it into a poem. Many of my poems are in fact songs; I often start with a guitar riff then the words just flow.

Love Politicians. I love anyone who can look you in the eye and tell you black is white, white is black.
I mean, it's an art. I don't know how many times I've googled the location of the University they go to get this lying degree. Anyone who can start a war, but not actually fight it, has to be a Politician.
