A Cold and Quiet Night

A Cold and Quiet Night

A Poem by JE Falcon
"

The Title says it all.

"

The hourglass turns

Yet the candle still burns

And the heart quietly yearns

In the body near the fireplace

On a cold and quiet night.

The thoughts travel to yesterday

To an adventurous time that slipped away.

Are they of love? I cannot say.

For some things should never be said

On a cold and quiet night.

The sound of a clock echos in the room

And the rocking-chair creeks an eerie tune

As the firelight dances like the wisp of a broom.

Then memories join in, in yesterday's den,

On this cold and quiet night.

A scene nicely set here. Sometimes on winter nights, looking into a fireplace fire, thoughts can be summoned to times past. Here the speaker declines to relate those memories, but hints that love may have been involved. An old saying seems appropriate here: Let sleeping dogs lie.

Yes, at times the best part of a fireplace is the thoughts that dance with the flames.

Things to ponder on a quiet night. You set the scene very well, and it reminds me a bit of Poe. Should those memories be welcomed or avoided?

Ah, an excellent choice. --- Have a great day.
Plenty of ambience here from that rocking chair looking into the flames of that fire on a cold, quiet night. Reflections of what was, what might have been even. Memories, they do have a habit of interfering with the quiet. Sometimes you would rather they didn't intrude. Your stanzas conveyed well and are relatable.
