The millennial conversation

The millennial conversation

A Poem by Isimbabi

There’s mist in the eyes of lovers

They’re blind to all that’s around us

There’s fire in the heart of expatriates

They’re blind to the hurdles around us,

Burning through thoughts, running through walls ‘cause acceptance is nonexistent in their mental

Tie them in bonds, locked behind doors, and uproars imminent they’ll come through

Chew on the metal if you have to!

Break free from the clout if the first world,

Break free from attention seeking; Dump the trends, ditch the hills, wear flat shoes with loose garments if you want to...

It’s your life you don’t get two(to),

Live free, breathe... think deep, think!

It’s not illegal yet; what Eddie Griffin said.

No philosophers are needed to see the end...

There are constraints and the media winds strings

I wouldn’t swear, but f**k!

It’s even taught us to grieve;
Show a caption, emojis and maybe even a little tit

Cleavage and all, that s**t’s the norm

It’s pedaling more, Likes from the world

While jealousy lingers in the hearts of clickers,

Your insecurities tower, ‘cause you don’t meet society’s standard for structure...

Bridge:

Is there hope for turn,

Have we burned the futures

There's no time to run, we're here to write your wrongs

But history's always ever won

We are obsessed with models,

Her breasts must be full not perky,

A*s, like D, yeah the letter.

He must have a six pack with a ripped back, a shredded chest,

A pair of khakis, no shirt and a friend’s benz.

It’s time to take blame for all your mistakes,

Now flourish, bring praise to your name...

Hey! You really love me?

Would you rather die than live without me?

Would you take the jump if I went first,

Would you ditch your friends if they try to ditch me?

Romeo Juliet redivivus.

When hearts twine,

Someone dies, someone cries, someone burns some other on the pyres

Some will lose heart,

Cripple minded till they tire.

Not me, I’m upright, no gyres!

Evil tops the scales and I know

but I was raised in the shires

Prior to my gen, maybe after...

Now sit against the vanity.

Assess your vanity.

Vain thoughts are blinding we,

Influenced by the cards of vanity.

Insanity!

Pardon me, I’m losing it.

Society’s state of rigor-mortis isn’t getting better...

We’re losing focus

Kids are running loose with the city’s chaos

Street brawls are celebrated

Kindness’ been subjugated,

To hate speech and prejudice, conjugated.

What’s that? The demography wasn’t always rocky?

Hold that thought

Remember Cain murdered Abel

Hold that thought

We used spears,

Before we had guns

Intolerance to our existence is fuel-for-drive to money and power

Machiavellian entire,

We’re justifying the lairs

We’re justifying the fires

Ravaging through history

We’re now defying our sires

There’s no happy ending,

Just accept the coming

They said the journey’s all that matters

So f**k the North Star?

I’m paraphrasing

But that’s what they keep saying

The notion’s an illusion we’re bound by our chains

Don’t go chasing freedom to be bound by loose chains

Get up your a*s, do something, you’re great

Bring praise to your name

Author's Note

This is a rap I wrote years ago(I had no plans to go into music. It was just a convenient way to express my thoughts). It was written as a conversation between myself and the millennial generation, addressing popular topics defining our time.

Being a song there are places that might not work together when you're reading linearly. I can't read it without a tune, transient piano sounds, metal strings and pounding bass drums in my head.

This is definitely a rap song, its not hard to understand that from the rapid fire delivery of the words down the page. You have some excellent examples of truth throughout this one. As a millenial myself it really resonates with me. Sometimes i just think our generation is so full of s**t. Perhaps i have a wiser head on my shoulders but i find the attention seeking antics, the need to fit in and the blatant anxiety that has riddled my generation as a disgrace. We are born in a world of plenty, most of us, yet many of us are bitching and moaning over unexistant hardships, getting all anxious over doomsday scenarios and protesting for all manner of rubbish and unfounded causes just to feel relevant. We have got it easy, yet we stress like its all too hard. I may be millenial by year of birth but for the most part this generation doesnt have the intestinal fortitude that i prefer to aspire to. Anyway, this was a fine write and i am sure it sounds great when used in its proper medium. Much enjoyed! :)
